MUTUA TO BUILD AIRPORT AT NEW MACHAKOS TOWN

Machakos County Governor Dr. Alfred Mutua approached Nema for approval to build an airport in Machakos town to boost regional trade and tourism. Located at Muvuti-Kiima-Kimwe Ward within the proposed New Machakos town, the Machakos Airport will sit on 104 hectares – about 8.5% of the planned 892-hectare town. The project involves construction of a taxiway, passenger and presidential terminals, as well as a 1.35km runway, and other amenities such as link roads and a water treatment plant. “The runway will be 1350m long and 45m wide. At both ends of the runway, a stop way will be constructed. The runway shoulders will be 7.5m wide and a Runway End Safety Area (RESA) of 180m length and 160m width will be provided at both ends of the runway,” Machakos says in its project report. The Machakos Airport’s passenger terminal, the airfield’s main terminal, will comprise 10 check-in counters, six security check points, 10 gates, six passenger boarding bridges, and immigration counters for arrival

Safaricom Wins Ethiopian Operating Licence.

Ethiopia's telecommunications regulator awarded one operating licence to a consortium led by Kenya's Safaricom Vodafone and Japan's Sumitomo Brook Taye, a senior adviser at the finance ministry, said on Saturday.
The consortium, which includes Vodacom and British development finance agency CDC Group, paid $850 million for the licence, Brook said. South Africa's MTN had also bid for a licence.
Africa's second-most populous country is hoping that the opening of one of the world's last major closed telecoms markets will create millions of online job opportunities.

The awarding of the new licence marks the "beginning of a new era in our country," the Ethiopian Communications Authority said on Twitter.

As as as the licence fee, the consortium plans to invest up to $8.5 billion in infrastructure among other areas, Brook said, adding that it was expected to create up to one and a half million jobs.

"With over $8 billion total investment, this will be the single largest FDI (foreign direct investment) into Ethiopia to date," Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said on Twitter.

The operator will begin with 4G services, Brook said.

"We will soon open a bid for the remaining licence," said Balcha Reba, director-general of the Ethiopian Communications Authority.

Balcha said MTN's offer of $600 million was deemed too low.

Safaricom in 2019 had estimated that it would have to pay about $1 billion for a new licence. 

Representatives from Vodacom and CDC Group declined to comment. Vodafone and Sumitomo Group could not immediately be reached for comment. Safaricom said that the company would issue a statement on Monday.

The Ethiopian government is also preparing to sell a 45% stake in state-run mobile operator, Ethio Telecom. Earlier this month, the operator launched a mobile phone-based financial service.

For the moment, only Ethio Telecom will be able to offer mobile financial services as foreign operators are currently barred by law from participating. However, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said that mobile financial services would be opened up to competition after a year.

 President Uhuru Kenyatta and Deputy President William Ruto are set to share a table for the first time after months of avoiding each other. The two leaders, who have fallen out over 2022 succession politics and the Building Bridges Initiative, are expected to grace the National Prayer Breakfast on Thursday. Helicopter crashes after flying H.E. Raila Odinga.

 The chopper that had dropped H.E. Raila Amollo Odinga crashed as it took off in Siaya County. According to Raila’s spokesperson Dennis Onyango, the helicopter, Bell 407 registration 5Y-PSM, had dropped Raila and four others at the venue and was trying to create space for other choppers when it crashed. He said the ODM leader was safe and had left the plane by the time of the incident. “The former PM is safe following an incident in which a chopper that had flown him from Kisumu to Gem in Siaya County crashed shortly after dropping him and his entourage of four people,” Onyango said in a statement. Onyango said the pilot, and those who were on board escaped with minor injuries. According to the chopper’s pilot Julius Mwambanga, the helicopter crashed as he tried to take off after dropping Raila who had accompanied President Kenyatta to the area to commission various projects.
